Couples Therapy Intensives in Bend, Oregon

More Time. More Depth. More Opportunity for Change

Sometimes 60 or 90 minutes just isn’t enough.

A Couples Therapy Intensive gives us something very valuable: time.

Instead of doing the work an hour at a time, spread across weeks or months, an intensive creates a protected period of time devoted entirely to your relationship. We have the space to slow things down, understand the patterns you’ve become caught in, stay with important conversations, and begin practicing a different way of reaching for and responding to one another.

You begin to get underneath the conflict or the distance between you to understand something important about one another. You begin to touch the more vulnerable feelings that have been difficult to put into words and suddenly, the session is over. Sometimes 60 or 90 minutes isn’t enough time.

The goal isn’t to rush the work. It’s actually the opposite. It’s to finally have enough time to do the work without constantly having to stop.

What Is a Couples Therapy Intensive?

A couples intensive is an extended, concentrated form of couples therapy. Rather than meeting for a traditional weekly or biweekly session, we devote a significant block of time to working together over several days.

Most couples aren’t struggling because they don’t care enough or haven’t tried hard enough. More often, they have become caught in a painful pattern or cycle. One partner reaches, protests, questions, criticizes, or becomes increasingly frustrated. The other may defend, explain, shut down, pull away, or feel that nothing they do will ever be enough.

Before long, both people are protecting themselves and neither person is feeling particularly safe, loved, heard, or understood. During an intensive, we have the time to really understand that cycle together. We look at what each of you is experiencing, what gets triggered or hits a nerve, how your individual histories may be showing up in your relationship today, and what each of you is actually needing from the other underneath the reactions.

And then we work on creating something different. Not simply “communicating better,” but helping you experience one another differently.

Why Choose an Intensive?

There is something powerful about stepping away from everyday life and giving your relationship your full attention. No rushing back to work, tasks, meetings, commitments after the session. No waiting another week to pick up an important conversation. No spending the first part of every appointment getting back into it or focusing on the newest conflict that happened since we last met.

With more uninterrupted time, we can stay with the work long enough to achieve depth and change. That doesn’t mean every problem will be solved in a weekend. Relationships are complex, and meaningful change still takes willingness, honesty, and practice.

But an intensive can create momentum. It can help you understand what has been keeping you stuck, experience moments of greater connection and understanding, and leave with a clearer sense of how to continue moving toward the relationship you both want.

Who Are Couples Intensives For?

Couples come to intensives from two different starting places. For Couples Already Doing Good Work in Therapy You may already be meeting with me regularly and making meaningful progress. You’re showing up. You’re doing the work. You’re beginning to understand your patterns—and perhaps even seeing one another differently. And yet you may find yourself wishing we had more time.

More time to stay with an important conversation. More time to work through something without having to put it away until our next meeting. More time to build on the progress you’re already making and get to some of the relief and closeness you’ve both been working so hard toward.

An intensive can be a wonderful complement to our ongoing work. It isn’t necessarily something you choose because weekly therapy isn’t working. Sometimes you choose it precisely because the work is working and you’re ready to go further.

For New Couples Ready to Jump In

You don’t have to be an existing client to choose an intensive. Some couples know they are ready to make a real investment in their relationship and simply don’t want to begin one hour at a time. Perhaps you’ve been circling the same issues for years. Perhaps something has happened that has shaken your sense of trust or security. Maybe you’ve gradually grown apart and want to find your way back to one another. Or maybe your relationship is fundamentally strong, but there are patterns between you that you know need attention and you’re ready to do something about them.

You don’t have to be on the brink of separation or divorce to benefit from concentrated couples work.

An intensive can also be for two people who love each other, value their relationship, and want to give themselves the time and space to make meaningful changes at a more accelerated pace.

You May Be a Good Fit for a Couples Intensive If…

• You keep having versions of the same argument and can’t seem to find your way out of it.

• You love one another but have begun feeling more like adversaries than partners.

• One or both of you feels lonely, misunderstood, criticized, rejected, or emotionally distant.

• Trust or emotional safety has been injured and you want help finding your way through it.

• You are already making progress in couples therapy and want to deepen or accelerate the work.

• You have busy lives and would prefer concentrated relationship work rather than months of weekly appointments.

• You are new to couples therapy but are ready to jump in and devote meaningful time to your relationship.

• You both have a genuine desire to understand yourselves and one another—and a willingness to look at your own part in the pattern.

You do not need to arrive knowing exactly how to fix your relationship. That’s what our work together is for. What matters most is that both of you are willing to come with some openness, curiosity, and a desire to understand what has happened between you.

What Does a Couples Therapy Intensive Look Like?

Before we spend the weekend together in Bend, OR I want to understand each of you—not just as partners, but as individuals. Before Your Intensive If we have not been working together, we will begin with two 60-minute individual Zoom sessions, one with each partner.

These conversations give me an opportunity to learn more about your history, your family of origin, past relationships and experiences that may have shaped how you protect yourself, connect, withdraw, pursue, worry, or respond when something important feels at risk. They also give each of you some private space to help me understand your experience of the relationship and what you most hope will be different.

By the time we meet in person, in Bend, OR, we are not starting from scratch. If I have been working with you, we will start the intensive work together as a couple and break into individual sessions as needed.

Your Intensive Weekend in Bend

The intensive includes approximately 8-10 hours of focused couples therapy together in person, spread over several days. This isn’t 10 straight hours of sitting on a couch talking. There are breaks. Time to walk. Time to eat. Time to nap. Time to absorb what we’ve been working on. Sometimes a little space between conversations is exactly what allows something important to settle. The extended format gives us the freedom to follow the work rather than the clock.

If we’re in the middle of something meaningful, we don’t necessarily have to stop because our usual therapy hour has ended. We have time to slow a difficult interaction down, understand what is happening for each of you, and help you begin responding to one another differently.

Throughout the intensive, we’ll work to:

• Identify the recurring cycle that keeps pulling you apart.

• Understand what each of you is experiencing underneath your reactions.

• Explore how your individual histories may be influencing the relationship today.

• Help each partner feel more understood by the other.

• Work with places where trust, safety, or connection have been strained.

• Practice new ways of reaching for one another when things become difficult.

• Begin creating more emotional safety, responsiveness, and connection between you.

Rather than deciding who is right or wrong, we become curious about what happens between the two of you and why a relationship between two people who care about one another can sometimes leave both people feeling so alone. There Is Structure and There Is Room

I come into the weekend with a clear clinical framework, but I don’t believe in forcing every couple through an identical program. Every relationship has its own story. Some couples need more time understanding the pattern they’ve been caught in. Others are working through a particular injury to trust. Some have become emotionally distant over many years. Others actually have a strong relationship but want help changing one stubborn pattern before it becomes something bigger.

We follow what your relationship needs. The goal is not to see how much we can cram into a weekend. The goal is to create enough time and safety that we can get beneath the surface, stay with what matters, and help the two of you begin experiencing something different together.

What Happens After the Intensive?

An intensive can create significant momentum, but it isn’t intended to suggest that a relationship should be completely “fixed” in one weekend. For existing clients, we can bring what we discovered and experienced during the intensive back into our ongoing sessions together. For couples who are new to my practice, we’ll talk toward the end of the weekend about what makes sense next. Some couples benefit from continued therapy; others may want some time to practice what they’ve learned before deciding whether additional work would be helpful.

Either way, you leave with a much clearer understanding of the pattern you get caught in, what is happening underneath it, and what each of you can begin doing differently when that pattern shows up again.

A Different Kind of Weekend in Bend, Oregon

There is something valuable about stepping away from home, everyday responsibilities, and the routines you’ve fallen into together. That’s one of the reasons I offer Couples Therapy Intensives in beautiful Bend, Oregon. Bend is a destination in its own right! Bend is a beautiful high-desert mountain town surrounded by the Cascades, ponderosa forests, alpine lakes, and wide-open spaces, with the Deschutes River running right through the center of town. It’s known for its natural beauty, wonderful restaurants, breweries, charming downtown, outdoor recreation, and relaxed Central Oregon vibe.

And while you certainly don’t need to turn your intensive into a vacation, I think there is something meaningful about going away together with a purpose. Your weekend has therapy built into it, but it also has breathing room. Between our sessions, you might walk along the Deschutes River, sit over coffee or a good meal, take a drive toward the mountains, explore downtown, or simply return to your Airbnb and let what happened in our session settle.

Bend makes it easy to find both quiet and beauty without needing to fill every moment with activity. Sometimes getting out of your usual environment helps you see one another and your relationship with a little more space and perspective.

My hope is that the weekend feels different from rushing into a therapy appointment in the middle of an ordinary week and then immediately returning to work, errands, children, phones, commitments and everything else demanding your attention.

For these few days, your relationship gets to be the priority. There is time to do meaningful therapeutic work, take a break, walk, eat, talk (or not talk) rest, and then come back together and continue. And hopefully, there are moments when you get to enjoy each other, too.

Bend provides a pretty wonderful backdrop for all of hat.
